Fraser Island is an island Australian located about 3:30 north of Brisbane. World Heritage Site by Unesco, with a length of 123 km, it is simply the largest sand island in the world! However, it is not a beach because, with strong currents and a strong presence of sharks in the area, swimming is simply prohibited. For obvious reasons, can not be accessed by 4x4 and is generally easier to go through a guided tour.
few days after my arrival in Australia, so I decided to book a tour (which was as having a target audience of young people 18-35 years old) for 2 days at Fraser Island. Then I was called by an employee of the tour operator informed me that (for reasons that seem a little obscure) that the 2 day tour was not available for my desired dates but for a nearly the same price, I could have a circuit for 3 days! I accepted this proposal although it would have a change of schedule on my itinerary (But I had foreseen this eventuality).
So I go on Friday morning in sunny central bus station ( transit center) from Brisbane for the start of my tour. With me, a Danish couple about my age. Our guide picked us up is a 4x4 around 6:30 am. Approximately 2 hours later, we made a stop in Noosa to take six other people. Considering the target age group suggested by our turn, I was surprised that the other 6 people were among a group of Australians whose average age was closer to fifty than their thirties! Fortunately, despite our significant age difference, they have managed to integrate well among us aware of three days of our tour.
By late morning, we arrived opposite the island, near Hervey Bay to take a ferry. The crossing is quick, lasting only 15 minutes. When we arrived, we had to drive a good thirty minutes in a 4x4 on the sand before stopping at EuroNGI Beach Resort (one of two resorts on the island) for lunch. In the afternoon, we started exploring the Lake Wabby, remarkable for a massive dune that surrounds (and gaining ground in a speed of 3 meters per year). On the way back we had the opportunity to encounter a dingo . This is a species of Australian wild dog found in significant amounts on the island. Two accidents with humans have also occurred in the past on this and last hotels now have electric fences to prevent their intrusion. Moreover, feeding a dingo could cost you a fine of $ 3000!
Late afternoon, we took possession of our rooms EuroNGI Beach before continuing the evening in the pub and restaurant of the hotel.

Our morning under a sky variable (again. ..) has started with a stop at Indian Head who is a rock, located at one end of the island, with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean to its summit. According to the guide, one could observe mantas, whales and sharks. Finally, we observed that some dolphins. A bit disappointing indeed ...
Before stopping for lunch at noon, we went to Eli Creek ( rapid river with crystal clear waters where you can swim), Pinnacles (the colored sand cliffs) and the famous Maheno (an old wreck of a steamboat in the early twentieth century). On the way back to EuroNGI Beach (for lunch), we met a friend of our guide, part of another tour, a little panicked because a person of his group had lost luggage on the way ( EuroNGI between Indian Head and ), probably because the trailer door was opened by accident!
In the afternoon, before returning to the hotel for the evening, we spent a few hours to Lake Birrabeen remarkable for its clear water.

------------------------- For a change, I woke up this morning in the rain! Really, for a state (see here Queensland) whose motto is "the sunshine state", the beginning of my vacation was just the opposite. Fortunately, the sun finally made its appearance and we spent our last hours on Fraser Island by visiting Central Station, a place that was used until the early '70s as a logging camp and where there are several hiking trails to the rainforest. In the latter, we could hear the Kookaburra, a bird species whose song is similar to a human laugh.
By late morning, we took the ferry and once on land, the last stop on our tour of 3 days was the famous beach Rainbow Beach. We then went back to Brisbane. In my case, I decided to go down to Noosa (instead of Brisbane) since it was my next city on my original route. I arrived in Noosa on overcast days! Really ....
